Ym mis Ebrill, wnaeth preswylwyr lleiaf Techniquest — sef nythfa o forgrug deildorrol — symud o’r Ardal Ein Byd ar y llawr cyntaf ar ôl saith mlynedd yn yr Ardal Golau Isel.
Mae’r lleoliad newydd hefyd yn dod gyda thanc newydd. Mae’r dyluniad siap ‘C’, sydd gyda bron 10% mwy o le na’r tanc hen, yn darparu profiad mwy rhyngweithiol i ymwelwyr sydd eisiau cael cipolwg agos i’r pryfed wrth eu gwaith.
Mae’r morgrug deildorrol yn cael enw fel y ffermwyr lleiaf y Ddaear, oherwydd — yn wrthwynebol i gred boblogaidd — dydyn nhw ddim yn bwyta dail, ond yn defnyddio nhw i fwydo ffwng sy’n cynhyrchu bwyd iddyn nhw.
Mae’r bwyd hwn, o’r enw gongylidia, wedi’i lenwi gyda seimiau a phroteinau sy’n cadw’r morgrug yn hapus, yn cefnogi tyfiant mewn poblogaeth, ac yn gweithio fel canlyniad o berthynas cydfoddhaol rhwng pryfed a ffwng.
Wnaeth Andy, sef arbenigwr morgrug a wnaeth goruchwylio’r symudiad y nythfa, rhannu mwy am beth bydd y newid yn meddwl i’w poblogaeth: “We have fitted a system involving these one-litre tubs filled with fungus.
“There are around one hundred of those buried in the soil, and it means that the colony can build three or four-times more volume of fungus so they can achieve three or four-times more in terms of sheer numbers.
“This new tank at full capacity would hold around 300,000–400,000 ants. The calculation that you apply if you want to estimate a colony’s size is there are around 10,000 ants per litre of fungus. Since we’re putting one hundred one-litre tubs in the tank, that would suggest you’d get a million ants in the tank, but there won’t quite be that many.”
Mae’r morgrug deildorrol yn fforwyr penderfynol, gyda nythfeydd yn y gwyllt yn cymryd yr un faint o dyfiant â buwch fawr pob dydd.
Yn Techniquest, mae’r nythfa wedi’i gysylltu a’i gyflenwad bwyd trwy pibell glir sy’n rhedeg uwchben — os ydych yn ymweld â Techniquest, ffeidiwch yr arddangosyn ar y llawr gyntaf ac edrychwch lan i weld miloedd o forgrug yn symud deil yn ôl i’w tanc!
Dywedodd Andy: “This colony, in terms of weight, you could equate to needing a full sized cabbage per day.
“When it’s going at full pelt, you would need to give it a combination of leaves, Brussels sprouts, and oats, and it’ll start to grow much, much larger than the old colony.
“In the wild, when they get to [a colony population of] three or four million, they will consume the same amount as an adult cow.
“That’s why they have such an impact on nature in the wild. If you’ve got, say, 200 large colonies per acre, you’ve got the equivalent of 200 cows per acre.”
Yn eu lleoliad newydd, bydd y morgrug yn cael mwy o olau, sy’n efallai arwain at gwestiynau o ran sut byddwn nhw’n addasu i’w amgylchedd newydd, ond mae Andy’n dweud does dim rheswm i boeni: “Their new area is a warmer part of the building, as it’s higher up and has the sunshine hitting it more, so it will probably benefit them if anything.
“They don’t care about light — they’ll build their fungus gardens against the glass whether it’s light or dark, it doesn’t matter to them.”
